For those that don't know I play ALOT of fighting games. I got into the fighting genre 2 years back when there were a few local tournaments around campus. I used to be really bad and mash a lot, but over time I put some work in and now I'm playing at a much higher level than I used to be. With that said some people have seen me play at a few VGS events and also on my YouTube channel and have asked me to teach them the games and the mechanics. So if anybody has any questions regarding a particular fighting game or just general tips post a reply and we can get a discussion going on how to level up. I currently play: Street Fighter 2 Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition 2012 Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 The King of Fighters XIII Street Fighter X Tekken Tekken 6 & Tag Tournament 2 SoulCaliburV and many more... Cos it feels goood to win!

Tekken is a 3D fighter that is heavily based on spacing and mixups. You wanna put your opponent in a 50/50 guessing game without putting yourself at risk . I'll explain this further but for now I'll talk about the most important part of any fighter:
Blocking
Before I start, 3 types of attacks in Tekken: -High Attacks -Mid Attacks -Low Attacks
Blocking is done by holding BACK or by not doing anything at all. However you will be hit by a low attack.
On the other hand if you hold diagonally DOWN-BACK you will perform a crouching block, but you are vulnerable to high attacks.
With this said you need to learn which attacks to block high and which attacks block low. You won't master this straight away but you will learn through experience and pick up your opponents patterns. You'll eventually notice that some characters like Eddy/Christie have alot of low attacks so you wanna block low alot for them.
What is a "Mixup"? A Mixup is when you force your opponent into a 50/50 situation and they are forced with a decision to block either high or low. I'll give the example of Hwoarang and his famous kick strings. These kicks generally hit Mid but by pressing the down button for example you'll end up hitting Low. So if I'm playing as Hwoarang and begin kicking my opponent, if i see that theyre doing a standing block then i would begin to hit Low instead. This is mixups in a nutshell
So in summary Block High for High Attacks, Block Low for Low Attacks. And Mid Attacks can be Blocked either way
Spacing
This is probably the most important aspect of Tekken. Spacing is keeping your distance from the opponent whilst staying at an attackable range. Having good spacing gives you many advantages:
-Your opponent has a harder time hitting you due to reach -Your opponent cannot grab you -You can perform moves that may be unsafe at a closer distance (I'll explain this later) -You can step back and watch your opponent mash like silly as you lol! ;D
So whats the correct distance to stay at? This is purely character specific, once again you'll learn through experience. By doing your most favourite/common moves in training mode, you'll find out the maximum distance needed for those moves to hit.
I see videos of players dancing around the stage and twitching like crazy, what's up with that!? Lol to explain it simply both players are trying to get their spacing and trying to bait their opponent at the same time. It's kinda hard to explain but basically they're moving forwards and backwards quickly in hope that their opponent tries to attack them and it misses. That way your opponent is in a vulnerable situation and you are at the correct distance to attack. This is high level tournament stuff no don't worry about this for now.
Can spacing be applied to other fighting games? Yes! Spacing is crucial to any fighting game as well as contact sports such as Boxing, Wrestling or Taekwondo. You always wanna hit your opponent as far away as you can and you always wanna bait your opponent out. Go watch a boxing match on the net, that dancing around in the ring is exactly what spacing is about.
To be continued...
